News: 2012 Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am

Ferrari and their out-of-house tuning firm, Michelotto, have wrapped up their initial development for the new Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am and have begun testing the vehicle on the Fiorano Circuit. If the name for this new racer doesn’t give it away, the 458 Italia Grand Am was produced as the first factory-sanctioned Ferrari to compete in the Grand-Am’s Rolex Sports Car Series GT class under the current GT rules.

The Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am is based on the GT3 version of the V8-powered Ferrari Berlinetta. The difference between the new 458 Grand Am model and the European version is that the Grand Am develops a total of 500 HP (and not 470 HP like other 458 Italia racing cars) at maximum revs of 8000. Slowing the North American Grand Am down is a 48 mm restrictor and less efficient aerodynamics than the GT version. Compared to a standard 458 Italia, the Grand Am model features a revised braking system (since the car is lacking ABS and traction control) and a roll-over bar which gives greater lateral protection thereby increasing safety. The car is fitted with tires from the Grand Am series’ sole provider, Continental.

News: Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale by Novitec Tridente

Novitec Tridente has dropped the suspension, mounted 22-inch alloys with a thin coating of Pirelli P Zero rubber, and – most crucially – superchaged and intercooled the engine (along with remapped management) up to 646 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, fed by a big air scoop in the hood. That drops the 0-62 time to 3.9 seconds, and increases the top speed to an autostrada-crunching 190 miles per hour. Extensive interior accoutrements can also be added to the package that starts at €23,900 ($32k)

News: Ferraris, Mercedes Benzes and Lamborghini crash in Yamaguchi, Japan

TOKYO (majirox news) — Fourteen cars crashed at 10:15 a.m. on Dec. 4 in Shimonseki, Yamaguchi prefecture, on the Chugoku Expressway.
Eight Ferraris, three Mercedes-Benzes and one Lamborghini were involved in the accident.
Ten people were taken to the hospital and suffered only minor bruises, according to police.
In the first hours after the crash, there was a lot of confusion as to what happened. No details were given; the expressway police are investigating the incident.
However, a 36-year-old man claimed the cars were making loud noises as they passed him by.
Whenever someone wrecks a car, it’s always a sorry situation. What’s even worse is when someone wrecks an exotic car. That’s when the repair costs tend to leave a serious dent in the wallet.

Update: A 60-year-old Ferrari driver, who was leading the group, caused the accident when he lost control on the wet road and hit the center divider, causing a chain reaction that wrecked the 14 vehicles, including seven other Ferraris, three Mercedes-Benzes and a Lamborghini. An oncoming Mercedes-Benz was hit by the debris. The two other cars were Toyotas.
The drivers of the exotic cars were from Kyushu and headed to Hiroshima.

Texas Supercar Goes Topless for 2013
SEALY, TEXAS – Hennessey Performance (HPE) will offer it’s ultra lightweight supercar with a removable roof. Dubbed the Venom GT Spyder, Hennessey’s 1200 horsepower, 1200 kilo, mid-engine monster will offer an extra dose of wind and sound when driven without the top.
“With the hardtop in place, the Venom GT offers a very visceral, raw, driving experience”, says company CEO, Don Goldman. “With the hardtop removed, the wind and the growl of the twin turbo V8 will offer our clients an even greater driving sensation.”
HPE will build just five Venom GTs for the 2013 model year, two of which have already been ordered. Deliveries will begin in the summer of 2012. Clients can purchase either model: the Venom GT – with a fixed hardtop roof, or the Venom GT Spyder – with the new removable top. Base pricing for the Venom GT is $950,000. The Venom GT Spyder is priced at $1.1 million.

“We are excited to be able to offer an open-air American supercar, built in Texas, that provides the best power to weight ratio available on the market,” says company founder, John Hennessey. “Simply put, the Venom GT Spyder is defined by its simplicity, elegance, performance and – for a lucky few – a driving experience like nothing else on Earth.”
